NOTE: 15:16-32 - Jesus Insulted and Crucified. Here we find Jesus turned over to Roman soldiers, who insulted and crucified Him.
Another man from Cyrene is mentioned in Scripture - Lucius - mentioned in Acts 13:1-3, one of the five elders or Presbyters from the City Church of Antioch. He was one of the three that under the Holy Spirit thrust out Barnabas and Saul on their first missionary journey. They started out as prophets and teachers, but were promoted to apostles; just as Stephen and Philip were promoted from deacons to Evangelists. Both Lucius and Simon of Cyrene were no doubt from the black race. All racial descendants from Adam are of one blood. We can receive transfusions one from another. And all of us as Adamic descendants are one from the Father of the spirits of all men! In heaven we will rejoice in all the racial divergences down here on earth - and yet we will know that we are indeed one! What a high privilege for Simon to be chosen to bear the cross of Christ!
In other Gospels, the Jewish religious leaders sought to have the inscription on Jesus' cross in 3 languages changed from “King of the Jews” - to - “He said he was King of the Jews.” But Pilate refused to further please their nit-picking desires. So - God's Son received through Pilate His correct title: King of the Jews!
Following the mocking of the Roman soldiers - next came the passers-by; then the chief priests and scribes; next those crucified with Jesus.
15:33-41 - Jesus was on the cross 6 hours. The ninth hour of the Jewish day, 3:00 pm for us, was the key time for this God-planned event on behalf of the whole human race. It was at this final time that the sinless soul of Jesus became sin for us and the Father at this time turned His face from His Son, who now was sin for us. But - His soul was sinless! Satan could not hold Him! He rose triumphant and victorious over death and the grave. Hallelujah! He is risen! Sin has been atoned for.
The rending of the veil between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies from top to bottom could not have been done by man. It was of God. It spoke that because of Jesus' death - man now had access to the Holy of Holies. The Jewish High Priest could only enter this place once a year on Yom Kippur, and that in fearfulness. Wenow can enter boldly to the very Throne of Grace to receive help in time of trouble. What a difference between the Old and the New Covenant, ushered in by the death of the Son of :man and the Son of God! The Roman Centurion was convinced by the darkness and earthquake and the extraordinary death of Jesus - that He was indeedGod's Son!
But these Jewish leaders sewed back the riven veil - ripped from top to bottom. It was fifteen feet high and four inched thick! Sewn together? The original ripping by God to justify His Son's death stillholds good for you and me - in spite of the Jewish leaders. J.A.W.
